Plastic tax

While many countries are curbing their use of single use plastics such as plastic straws and plastic bags, it seems to barely scratch the surface of the problem of plastic pollution. Hence our Sales and Marketing Director at Smart Soda Mark Butterfield, regularly picks up quantities of rubbish in his neighbourhood; an area known for its natural beauty but sadly often frequently littered with single use plastic. Let’s face it, our plastic footprint is literally all over the place!

What's the problem with singles use plastics?

Packaging is the biggest source of plastic waste, and not nearly enough of it is being recycled. Subsequently over 5 trillion pieces of plastic currently litter our oceans. The only thing scarier about that, is this figure will continue to increase. Plastic waste is not limited to the sea, it is almost everywhere in the form of microplastics: in our air, our food and even our bodies. Maybe as consumers, we are the ones that need to make the decision to stop using single use plastic.

Zero waste solutions

Is going single plastic neutral so difficult, we should ask ourselves. The alternatives seem plentiful enough. At Smart Soda we encourage the use of refillable cups and bottles as well as only supplying biodegradable cups and straws to use with our alkaline water-based beverages. Being sustainable and protecting the environment is our top priority. Our ethos of health and wellbeing applies not just to our bodies but the planet too as we strive to be known as the UK’s top sustainable soft drinks supplier.

You can really make a difference

If we can’t ban single use plastic completely, then at least let’s try and prevent it from ending up in the sea. Litter picking groups all over the country have sprung up to tackle the problem of plastic waste. These groups share a great sense of community, appreciation, and sense of pride in their local areas. If there isn’t one in your area why not set one up? Check out this link for more information on how to get involved https://www.cleanupuk.org.uk/

Mark added...

“I litter picked up on my walk on Sunday morning, this was all collected from the side of the road/hedgerow, and within one mile of my home located in The Surrey Hills an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Who are these people that believe it’s OK to desecrate our wonderful and precious countryside by discarding their rubbish? What’s worse is that I had only focused on this stretch a few weeks ago and I know other friends in the surrounding area have also been active!

Much of what we collect is single use plastic. Just making a few small changes to what we consume and the packaging the products are in could reduce our carbon footprint significantly. And as for the rubbish…always take it with you and dispose of it correctly!”
